Essbase CDFs Explained: Pulling Back the Curtain and Opening a World of Possibilities

Essbase Custom Defined Functions (CDFs) are an advanced Essbase topic that has been largely ignored. Most CDF presentations have focused on what they can do; however, none really pull back the curtain and show how they work and how to create one from scratch.

The barriers to entry for many EPM administrators are twofold: compiling Java archive files through the command line as described in the documentation is cumbersome at best, and no one has ever shown how simple it is to deploy a CDF and More…verify that it is working.

This presentation will show the audience how easy it can be to setup an environment to compile Java files into JARs that can then be used as Custom Defined Functions in Essbase.  Using Oracle developer tools such as JDeveloper, compiling Java classes into JARs can’t be easier once the environment is properly setup.

Oracle has sample CDFs that have been available for years.  These CDFs will be reviewed as well as past content from Matt Millella and the Essbase Labs team.  No Java programming experience is required for this session, as we will not be discussing any programming concepts other than using existing CDF source code available from Oracle.

Essbase and Java can work together to open up a world of possibilities to EPM administrators.  With this presentation, we will knock down the barriers to entry for EPM administrators and make Essbase’s CDF technology easier to implement and understand.
