Arlington, Texas, December 9, 2014 – Edward Roske, CEO of interRel Consulting, has been appointed as Head of the Admissions Committee for Shimer College. Shimer was named the “Worst Place to Study in America,” according to a recent ranking by the Washington Monthly. After the standings were released, Jon Ronson of The Guardian went to Shimer’s home in Chicago to investigate and determined that while Shimer may be the worst traditional college in America, it may also be the future of education. Earlier this year, Roske was inducted into Shimer’s Board of Trustees and is also a former student of Shimer from the 1990’s.
After studying at Shimer College, Edward Roske went on to enter consulting and became the first Essbase certified consultant in the world. He is now an Oracle ACE Director and a world-renowned speaker who has spoken on six continents just this year. In 1997, Roske co-founded one of the leading Oracle Business Intelligence consulting firms, interRel Consulting. interRel has been named to the Inc. 5000 List of America’s Fastest-Growing Private Companies for seven consecutive years. Roske also co-authors the “Look Smarter Than You Are” book series.
“Attending the worst college in America was the best experience I could have had for starting my own company. At Shimer, you cannot hide: all the classes are discussion-based and if you don’t participate, you don’t pass. It removed the fear I used to have about speaking up, making an argument, and then defending it,” said Edward Roske. “I am honored to be heading the Shimer Admissions Committee. I will help the college grow in any way I can because more than any educational experience I’ve ever had, Shimer has made me the person I am today.”
Shimer College is a small, private, liberal arts college located a few miles from downtown Chicago, Illinois. It was founded in 1853 by Frances Wood Shimer and Cinderella Gregory. Shimer has no more than 12 students per class in order to focus on discussion, not lecturing. Shimer believes in reading original works instead of textbook summaries of the great ideas from classical literature.
“Shimerians like Edward Roske are leaders and leaders know that being the worst of the traditional means being the best for today,” said Susan Henking, President of Shimer College.
Dr. Chris Vaughan, Chairman of Shimer College’s Board of Trustees, added, “If being the worst means Shimer produces wildly successful entrepreneurs like Edward Roske and our many other creative and trailblazing alumni, I hope Shimer just keeps getting worse all the time.”
